Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scanning

June 7, 2022

“In i care opticians we pride ourselves in investing in the newest technology to ensure that our patients receive the best eye care possible.  We  are proud to offer 3D Retinal scanning to all our patients”

What is an OCT Scan?

Where a retinal photograph only shows you the top of your retina, an OCT scans right through the retina allowing our optician Stephen to see every layer.  This gives him a much more accurate way to identify and monitor eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic eye disease.

Who would benefit from an OCT Scan?

In an ideal world every patient would have an OCT Scan with every sight test as it is fast becoming the gold standard for the hospitals diagnosing and monitoring all retinal eye conditions.

For patients who have or have a family history of Macular degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetes or Retinal detachment a yearly OCT scan is the best way for an optician to monitor your condition or to ensure that you are not developing these conditions.

How much does an OCT scan cost?

In i care opticians you pay a one off fee of £40 to register as an OCT patient.  After this you will have an OCT Scan at every sight test for no extra charge.

How do I register as an OCT Patient?

Either say to Stephen at your next sight test or give us a call on 028 7082 4444 and request a sight test with an OCT scan.

Optic Nerve Assessment

Glaucoma is the progressive loss of nerve fibres at your optic nerve.  At i care we monitor your optic nerve using OCT technology enabling our optometrist to identify the any possible sign of glaucoma developing or changing.  We also assess the nerve fibres at your macula (the centre part of your eye), as this can help us identify glaucoma at an earlier stage.
